Kathmandu must have experienced!

You can not describe Kathmandu, you have to experience that!
Go shopping and take a look at the various religious temples at the village square.
Late in the afternoon I'm going to visit the biggest stuppa in the world.!

Am again at the lake

Now it's evening, I'm back here by the lake (Fewa Lake, Pokhara). I showed my fancy water filter to my Nepalese friends, and we filtered seawater and drank it :-)
Now with the rowboat brought a pizza and drunk for safety still a gin ...
Tomorrow I have to look for a good bus connection to Kathmandu. There are lots of interesting things to look at there.

Yet out of the mountains!

Have left my quarters, although it is very nice here and there is everything you need. Someone even recognized me on the street and said that he was following my blog the whole time!
But I wanted to go to the mountains again, flew to Annapurna and made another campfire and cooked noodles!

Passenger approval from Pokhara to Kathmandu?

I met with Bassanta in Pokhara. Unfortunately, he could not help getting a permit to fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Military airports, helicopters, mountain rescue ... there is nothing to do. I will be at 8.11. take the bus to Kathmandu.

Photo: At the barber ...

There's something going on!

Now I am alone on the route, I'm going on vacation now ... because Basti has already started his way home. The weather looks good for the coming week .... there is more flying to be had! Since I did not plan the trip as a race and I also want to learn from the country and the people, I will take advantage of the remaining week. There are also a few very exciting mountains around me, close enough to touch. I have to take advantage of that!

Enjoy the view of Dhaulaghiri and Annapurna

Have found a cool hut, with a spectacular view of Dhaulaghiri and Annapurna .... will fly to Pokhara for showering. Flying to the top of Annapurna would be difficult as the cloudbase is too low. I'm on the way to Pokhara, that will be tough ... base at 3500m and the passes are higher!

a kind of mud hut

I ended up in a village where a hotel consists of a kind of mud hut ... But at least running water and solar power. And good food. The Nepali are super funny and it is really nice here!

Now, snow us!

We do not travel to Pokhara so fast ... now it's snowing!

It's snowing

Today, the weather has deteriorated massively, it is snowing. We are still separated. Basti is stuck in a hut, me in the tent.

Bhalu Lek

At first we were always together, but we lost sight of each other after flying into another cloud. I had to land north of the Bhalu Lek because the wind was too strong. Basti flew south another 30 km, so we were separated again.

Through dense tiger country to the starting place

Are back out of "Africa", the lungs still full of smoke from fire on the floor of the hut last night, seems that chimneys are not common. We hiked through dense tiger country, literally, to the starting place. Now flying!
16.11 am: Got fresh bread and kohlrabi. Here there are no roads, everything is transported of foot trails. The flight today was not very productive, but exciting and beautiful. Now we have made a big fire, and will rest.

Deep in the wilderness

We practically landed in the wilderness .... Its very authentic here with farmers working the land the same way they have for thousands of years. We just finished a delicious vegetable and rice dinner, yum!

Lecker!

Namaste! We are back in the race! Now in the mountains at the camp fire!

Namaste!

The last part of our adventure – on to Pokhara

First we have to go back to the mountains as the air here at the official border to Nepal is too stable to fly. By bus would be the last possibility, since the road across the Makahali Highway is known to be terrifying (Google Makahali Highway). We will try to find another solution to get into the famously rugged and authentic West Nepal! So we are going to stock up on our food today. I look forward to the classic rhythm of flying, navigating and bivouacing. In the last days we could make between 70 km and 100 km a day - if we succeed in the 3rd part, we will make the goal of Pokhara! Ahead of us we have difficult high passes, strong valley winds, natural reserves, and government officials.

Now we are finally in Napal

After the incident in Gangotri we wanted to start flying without any bureaucracy problems, so we jumped off the bus at a pull-out, and started hiking up rough terrain. At some point we were in the total jungle, bushwhacking without a trail. Basti climbed trees to see above the jungle canopy and help us navigate. Dehydrated and completely finished (it was so loud in the bushes, that was certainly not a small animal) we tried to sleep in the jungle. The next day a great flight! 110 km, and lastly 75 km to the border with Darchula. It would have been perfect, we could have entered Nepal there. But 3 security agencies and a lot of private policemen interrogated us, as in a bad film. Lights shinning in our faces in a cold room. If we lie ... after endless hours and ID card copying, fortunately they could not prove that we had flown. Today we had to drive the gruesome crowded bus 250 km on bad pass roads far into the lowland. Now we are finally in Nepal! We will try to find another way to return to the mountains tomorrow.

Super flight to the border

Super flight to the border! And now disaster with the police. We went to Darchula and are now being interrogated as if we were the Stasi!
I've had enough of the officials! The peasants are so nice but as soon as one has a uniform on he becomes an asshole! This can spoil everything. Basti is still being interrogated by private policemen. If one person testifies that we have flown, they will confiscate our equipment!
... Now it looks better. All the policemen are gone and the passports are back. We have showered and we drank 2 "Godfather" beers... Tomorrow we'll take the bus to the border station, where we will enter Nepal. 12 hour cramped and bumpy bus ride in front of us!

20.10.2017

Today I ate chapati with stew! Delicious! Earlier we had a super flight in lower mountains. Lots of clouds and hillsides with grass and forest. Basti and I have decided to avoid big population centers due to the police ... after our mishap we agreed that we will just sleep in the mountains. Even the mountain people wanted to see my passport. The famous Indian bureaucracy is in full effect!

Low cloudbase

Today cloud base was so low that we had to fly and hike in clouds to progress over a pass. Starting tomorrow, the passes will be lower, hopefully we will make faster progress. Yesterday we had to fly deep though tiger country to avoid the low, stable valley. We spent a long time hiking and climbing on very steep cliffs in a white-out fog. At one point I was sure a bear was following us. Never again! Im glad we survived it!!

Out into nature

We have, of course, bathed extensively in The Ganges ... (which is reputed to clean oneself of all his sins, and it comes from the Gangotri glacier). However its not so clean here, the garbage is burned on the street, and our room is filthy ...
So, we got up at 4 A.M. and went with the 5 A.M. bus out into the mountains. We have enough food to last to the border. Sitting on the bus with a fervent preacher who resembles a lemming ...
We survived the first hour on this hellish bus ride, still 2 hours to go. People puke from the side windows as we gaze forward through tired eyes ... Well, things will get better ...

Namaste

Namaste. Nothing is going on. We have been waiting all day for a ranger to leave the area. I have no idea what will happen now. At noon there was chabatte (bread), rice, vegetables and spicy vegetable soup. We need patience!
...The fun has cost us 250 dollars. The humor is on the ground. We are now in Gangotri town. As encouragement, there's pizza. So, after garlic soup, pizza, Mango-Lassi and Pancakes with Nutella we are seeing the world differently again, only beer was missing...

Namaste. Hier geht nichts voran.

Checkpoint

This morning we warmed ourselves up in the sun, and repaired equipment.  Unfortunately, my solar panel is broken ...
...A bit later in the day we were caught at the checkpoint to the national park.  We are detained with a praying priest in a room without windows. Passports seized, but at least there should be food!
... We had a delicious Hindu dinner! In the national park flying is not allowed and the border to China is close. When we leave here, we have to take the bus back to the South West and fly around the area. All the people have been very nice to us here, despite the circumstances!

Long flight until sunset!

A long flight practically until sunset, but unfortunately little wood found for fire and cooking. Our feet are ice cold, now off into the sleeping bag to warm up. Tonight I'll dream of Bavarian style roast pork with dumplings! Good night!

Gute Nacht!

The first trip target!

Good morning, we have reached the first trip target! Now we go to the Garhwal to Gangotri and if possible pass the Shivling over a 6000m pass ... Then over complex terrain to the border of Nepal in Dharcula. It will be exciting today with the large Kullu valley crossing.
Everything completed: showered, laundry washed, solar panel repaired, legend visited (John Silvester)!

Alles erledigt: Geduscht, Wäsche gewaschen, Solarpanel reparieren lassen, Legende besucht (John Silvester)!

Bier in Bir...

We made a nice flight from Rohtang pass to Bir, 85km with vultures. We're happy and we met at the Biling take off after an epic ride, from the backyard of the Himalayan range to the front end of India. Bir is like Bassano...

Take off Billing wieder getroffen. Bir ist fast so wie Bassano ...

Snow Point

Good morning, we are now in Qilong. From there we will take the bus to the Rohtang pass and try to take off from Snow Point ...

Too much wind at the Shingga La Pass

I am in the village of Chikka and have experienced great hospitality here. Unfortunately I ripped my jacket and glider on the Shingga La Pass, due to strong wind. I have repaired them with sticky cloth, and am waiting for better conditions.

Basti has flown to Keylong and landed there. That is not allowed. What he did not know is that he landed 200m from to the police station. As he took off in Padum (other district), he did not have to pay 10 dollars penalty, but do a 10 doller donation, and he got his glider back. The negotiations took a whole day, so it was not bad that I arrived later. My bus trip from the pass was so adventurous that I do not want more bus rides on the mountain roads!

Dinner for one

Today we lost sight of each other again...  I'm here eating a "dinner for one".   I'll stay where I am tonight and sleep near the pass.  I'm hoping we can team up again tomorrow.

An insanity flight up to 7000m!

Good Morning! Yesterday it was cloudy, but today the weather is good again. Last night was freezing cold, estimated -10 ° C. Today we want to launch from the pass and do a Zanskar traverse. We'll wait in the tent, and stay warm, until the sun rises!
...
Yesterday and last night we had headaches - maybe too high?
This morning our headaches are gone and at the pass (5000 m) we also felt well.
An insane flight up to 7000m! We lost each each other in flight two times, but found each other again! We landed in Ichar with cheering children. The teacher took us to his homestay, where we got rice with vegetables and lots of tea again.
Today was just crazy, we could hardly believe it ...
Tomorrow we head towards Keylong, hopeful for more great flying weather.
Good night!

Guten Morgen!
Gute Nacht!

Yippee, in the snow!

We took a shortcut. In the morning we head towards Padum.
Unfortunately there is no chance of a mobile network connection. Electricity is limited, due to fog we also have limited solar-charging possibility. We will check in again when we have reception and electricity. Check out the photos of Zanskar Padum Valley on Google photos, it's worth it!

Waiting at 4900m

We hiked up to 4900m and waited for the strong wind to calm down. Our plan was to fly to Lamayuru, but eventually the strong wind forced us to walk down.......

Acclimatization at 3700m

We ran almost the whole day on a dilapidated watery trail along the Indus to the mouth of Zanskar.
Then 15 km on a paved road to a turn-off that led us to an adventurous trail with a few notable creek crossings to our camp at 3700 m, and cooking over a warm campfire. until after a few stream crossings and on an adventurous path at 3700 m our camp fire ignited.
Our acclimatization works well, 60bps resting pulse and no headaches. My only concern is blisters on my feet....

Leh / Zanskar Valley

We bought SIM cards for our mobile phones today (and we got them for a whole 5 dollars!). During that process we had to cope with some more Indian bureaucracy. After these small challenges of everyday life, we hiked from Leh out in to the Zanskar Valley. Here are some pictures - the environment is simply great, the people here incredibly friendly. Basti and I get really well along and look forward to our adventure. (Click on the photo and then on the image gallery to see the pictures & Video)

Arriving New Delhi

After arriving New Delhi we missed the last connecting flight to Leh. The luggage from Basti was temporary lost while mine was just lying in the middle of the treadmill hall. We had Lots of fun in Delhi! Things are different in india, you never know whats going on and it is better you take the time needed. We're in a good mood!
