What’s new?

The CERRO’s canopy isn’t a direct 1:1 copy of the TORRE just with lighter fabric. Changes have been made to further reduce weight, improve take-off characteristics and fine-tune the best possible handling for this model. For example, Aspect ratio, canopy shape and details in the inner structure. In terms of weight alone, the two paragliders differ by 1250 grams (M size) - enough to make the CERRO feel pleasantly light in your backpack. In the air CERRO is converting even the smallest lifts  into altitude effortless. The speed bar and rear-riser controls can be used precisely, and the canopy’s feedback is noticeable without being “jittery.” Another new feature is the revised weight range, which now extends up to 120 kilograms takeoff weight. 

How did the development process unfold in detail?

CERRO implements all knowledge and features proven successful in TORRE. The goal of this model is to reduce weight as much as possible, improve the take-off behavior for all wing sizes, launch types and wind speeds. These are key factors for a hike & fly wing. The other goal is making wing even more accessible, while the performance and top speed remain close to TORRE. These goals are met by canopy simplification including a slight reduction of the number of cells and the aspect ratio. The weight reduction is significant, so the pleasure with CERRO begins with the first steps of the hike and continues after take-off. 

Rods in the front and rear areas reinforce the individual cells and prevent deformations that would disturb the optimal shape. This provides shape stability, especially during accelerated flight, and thus ensures optimal leading-edge efficiency. Going full throttle and leaving the others behind is therefore no problem with CERRO. The glide ratio remains high across the entire speed range. As is typical for a 2-liner, the pilot can compensate for turbulence very effectively using the rear risers, allowing even the slightest updrafts to be converted into altitude gain. Less lines mean less drag by the way - and thus more performance. The stable canopy is highly resistant to collapses, and even if one does occur, experienced pilots can easily recover from it. This is where the C-class safety margin comes into play.

Nice to know: When the wing’s silhouette is curved in a crescent shape, as with the CERRO, this leads to greater agility during thermal flying. This is a good thing, as it enables the tight circles that were already so highly praised in the TORRE. Conversely, this would also make spiraling more dynamic - but this is precisely where the winglets come into play. At UP, winglets only go into production if, like pieces of a puzzle, they truly contribute to the glider’s flight behavior alongside all other features. CERRO is UP’s second glider with winglets after the TORRE. Thanks to them, as has been demonstrated, spirals can be exited more effectively because they provide directional stability. The final combination of all features ensures perfect handling in every maneuver.

CERRO is equipped with new type of lightweight risers. They have an adjustable handle for rear-riser steering, which improves ergonomic control and can be adapted to pilots of any build and height. Check FAQ for details on this. The risers are made of lightweight 7-mm aramid webbing, which is durable and easy to set up at takeoff, while remaining lightweight. The special ball-bearing micro-pulley system reduces weight without compromising quality or function.

Who is the CERRO suitable for?

The CERRO is ideal for hike & fly pilots looking for excellent performance in the EN-C class. It is the right choice for pilots transitioning from a High-B glider who want to advance their skills, as well as for more experienced pilots seeking the control and performance of a 2-liner with a lower aspect ratio. In short, it’s for XC pilots thinking of bivouac adventures, who appreciate unparalleled stability and easy handling while having a lightweight wing. In terms of overall performance, the CERRO is close to TORRE but it does not weigh you down during the ascent to the take-off on foot. All our models offer the typical UP handling - something we place great importance on.

However, only those who use “C-control” - or, more precisely, rear-riser steering - can truly exploit the potential of a 2-liner for cross-country flying. So it’s worth learning how to do this. It’s also important to know that, due to its 2-liner design, a B-stall on CERRO cannot be used as a descent aid. Big Ears can be performed using either the AR3 or BR3 technique. The AR3 technique is simple and remains stable across the entire speed range. Experience with spiraling is also important. If these prerequisites are met, the CERRO - as mentioned - can also help existing B-class pilots make the transition to this new wing class. For anyone already experienced with C-class wings and 2-liners: go for it and have fun! With the CERRO, you can maintain higher speeds even in turbulence - all while retaining full control over the angle of attack.

How does it fly?

During takeoff, the CERRO climbs quickly and purposefully over the pilot’s head. While the TORRE requires a bit more input due to its heavier fabric, the CERRO, thanks to its lightweight fabric, is ready to take off with less input. All lines are uncoated but color-coded, ensuring clarity both on the ground and in the air. The CERRO responds quickly and precisely to control inputs. This makes it easy to efficiently center tight thermals. Even the slightest updrafts - which other pilots might perceive only as turbulence - can be converted into altitude with minimal effort thanks to the rear-riser control system. The extreme pitch stability is also particularly practical, supporting performance-oriented cross-country pilots when flying into and out of strong lift. This characteristic typical of 2-liners comes into its own with the CERRO, as even during strong climbs, the canopy remains centered over the pilot without requiring major corrections. This saves energy and enables optimal glide performance, since you can stay on the accelerator instead of making course corrections. In other words: The glider compensates for turbulence without losing stability, so it remains compact even in the strongest winds - a characteristic that enables responsive handling under demanding conditions.

How big is the XC potential?

You can spend plenty of time on full bar with the CERRO. The XC potential is correspondingly high - even from launch sites that can only be reached on foot.
